Our Essence

Crisis Management

Crisis Management at Fibria involves the work of seven committees, of which five are regional (Aracruz, Jacareí, Três Lagoas, Horizonte 2 Project, and Portocel), one is Corporate (Executive Board and Presidency), and one of the Board of Directors. These are collegiate multidisciplinary groups, which deliberate and manage actions conducted before and after the crisis. For every commission there is a "Crisis Center," which deliberates and manages actions taken during the crisis.

This Crisis Management structure streamlines communications between operational and corporate areas. It protects the company's value and minimizes any adverse impacts that, if not managed, could compromise the organization's image and reputation.

About the Crisis Committee

The Crisis Committee is composed of a multidisciplinary team that convenes quarterly to discuss the unit's main issues with potential for crisis. The diversity of the members in the commissions allows for a certain aspect to be explored by many different areas. During the discussions, the areas present to the committee the indicators and ongoing action plans to mitigate the associated risks, as well as the evolution of the Business Continuity Plans (PCN - Planos de Continuidade de Negócio) established for the year.

Alerts in 2016

During a declared crisis or state of alert, the Crisis Center of each unit establishes the frequency of meetings according to the severity of the situation and the need to report facts. In 2016, the Centers in Jacareí, São Paulo, and Aracruz, Espírito Santo, were specially mobilized in the following cases.

Accident  in Jacareí

Fibria provided assistance to the family of an employee who died in an accident at the wastewater treatment plant. This is a confined space, in which there was leakage and flooding of organic iodine, which favors the release of extremely toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Support to direct family members and co-workers included individual psychological counseling. In addition, the causes of the accident were analyzed in order to improve safety procedures.

Accident in Espírito Santo

A contractor died in a highway accident during the transportation of wood between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais. The driver was hired by the company WWC, an affiliated company of Júlio Simões, our supplier. WMC, through Julio Simões, provided assistance to the family, with frequent monitoring by Fibria.

Water Crisis in Espírito Santo

The water crisis in Espírito Santo and the impact of the Samarco accident on the Doce River, which supplies the reservoirs of the Aracruz mill, became constant issues for the Aracruz Crisis Commission. Given the contamination of the Doce River with iron ore from sludge released in Mariana (Minas Gerais), Fibria's technical staff developed a technology capable of treating the water and maintaining water supply to nearly 15,000 people, in addition to supplying the industrial operation, without interruptions. Part of the water that supplies Fibria's mill in Aracruz, Espírito Santo, comes from the Doce River, with an interconnection through the Caboclo Bernardo canal, which is 46 kilometers long and is maintained by the company in partnership with the government. The canal's catchment gates were closed on November 20, 2015, and reopened on December 28 of that year. In this period, Fibria developed a treatment process to reduce water turbidity, eliminating suspended materials. After laboratory tests, it was confirmed that the treated water was suitable for consumption. In order to implement the treatment, barriers along the canal were built in record time, forming containment and decantation basins. Pumps and aerators were also installed. With this, water supply for the local population and Fibria was normalized.
