Wood Theft

The fight against wood theft is one of the constant challenges in the country's forestry activity. Between 2011 and 2013, Fibria obtained a 95% reduction in the amount of deviated wood, maintaining stability the following year. In 2015, however, the amount of theft increased once again - reaching 82,000 m³, an amount four times larger than in 2014, due to the Brazilian economic recession and water shortage that adversely affected family agriculture, mainly in the North of Espírito Santo and South of Bahia.

Attentive to these two problems, which did not subside in 2016, we intensified actions related to property security, with the support from public agencies. Through this measure and the implementation of more social transformation projects in the communities neighboring our operations in Espírito Santo, the wood theft recorded is 66,000, which is 20% lower than the previous year.

The greatest loss of raw material continues to be in the North of Espírito Santo (90% of the stolen wood), where we are increasing our actions, in partnership with the official institutions, and reviewing the relationship strategy and social investment in the region.
